Monster Mittens Sewing Tutorial
These easy on mittens have no thumb hole to wrestle with and no left or right to confuse. Cute monsters keep kids warm and they are fun enough to keep on! The difficulty level on this project is advanced beginner skill level but if you are just starting out polar fleece is very forgiving fabric to work with. I have made the pattern in 3 sizes; small is baby size, medium is toddler, and large is young child. I’m sure you could size it larger with no problem.
What you will need:
- Sewing machine
- Fabric marking tool
- 1/4 yard polar fleece
- 1/4 yard ribbed knit
- Embellishments: rickrack, ribbon, felt, snaps or buttons
- Pattern ($3.50 download available)
A trick I use, pin through pattern at dot and lift away the pattern wile pin is still in place, then mark at pin
Cut strip of rib knit for band, you will need:
- 2 – Small 6″ x 4 1/2″
- 1 – Medium 7 1/4″ x 4 1/2″
- 1 – Large 8 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
Pin front to back with right sides together.
Sew each side only to dot with a 1/4″ seem.
Be sure to back stitch when starting and stopping.
Pin rickrack around the palm piece on the right side, 1/4″ in from the edge to the center of the rickrack turning the last bit off the edge at the beginning and end.
Baste in place
On back piece place eyes on the mittens at the star marks. You can appliqué, embroider if you are fortunate to have a machine, use buttons or plastic snaps for eyes. ( buttons should not be used for children under 3!)
Pin palm to front and back right sides together placing the dot at the spilt.
Sew the front to palm with a 1/4″ seem just inside the basting stitch for the rickrack.
Turn work and sew the back to palm with a 1/4″ seem.
Turn mitten right side out.
Fold rib knit strip right sides together in half matching the side that measures 4 1/2″
Sew with 1/2″ seem
Fold in half with wrong sides together to create a cuff.
Stretch to match with mitten bottom matching raw edges pin in place.
Sew with a 1/2″ seem. You will need to stretch them slightly to have it lay flat for sewing.
Trim threads and turn down the cuff.
